SafeMoon’s Ex-CEO Sentenced to 100 Months for $9M Crypto Fraud
Braden Karony, former CEO of the cryptocurrency platform SafeMoon, has been sentenced to 100 months in federal prison following his conviction on charges of securities fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. The U.S. Department of Justice revealed Karony siphoned over $9 million from the project's liquidity pool in 2021, diverting funds to finance luxury vehicles and a $2.2 million Utah mansion.
Prosecutors detailed how investor money purchased an Audi R8, Tesla, and customized trucks while eroding trust in the crypto project. Karony was ordered to forfeit $7.5 million, with victim restitution amounts pending determination. Two co-conspirators face separate proceedings—one awaiting sentencing, another still at large.
The case underscores growing regulatory scrutiny of cryptocurrency executives misusing investor funds. FBI Assistant Director James C. Barnacle Jr. emphasized how Karony's actions represented a fundamental betrayal of his leadership position in the digital asset space.
